Through a filter of vanity

Guillermo del Toro said he’d looked at life, “through the filter of vanity.” Which I feel so aptly describes the way I lived before this loss. Now that filter’s shattered and colors are crushed underfoot. Sometimes I can zoom into what is real and untouched.

Watching Ivan, Meg, and me navigate bringing Dad home has glimmers of unconditional love. Likewise, watching friends reach out for the only purpose of being there is about as true an emotion of unselfish kindness as I’ve felt.

My hometown newspaper did a feature on The Trimesters of Grief. Somehow this book launch feels like another funeral, another chance to come full circle and honor Nicholas and our family.

—

This week I’ve been juggling missing Nicholas, a book launch, a poetry launch, and logistics about how to bring my dad home from the hospital. Someone said I’m the sandwich generation, and that tracks.

What doesn’t track is that someone asked, “What about your other kids?” As if they weren’t in the center of this loss as well. Our culture really doesn’t understand how loss works.

You can love and grieve at the same time.

Want to help with the book launch?

Amazon has an algorithm where books with 10 reviews are given more priority, and then those with 50 reviews get pushed even higher… so

If you’ve read my book (or are going to read it)  would you write me an amazon review? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H6GTLHN8/?bestFormat=true&k=the%20trimesters%20of%20grief%20katie%20rizzo&ref_=nb_sb_ss_w_scx-ent-bk-ww_k1_1_23_de&crid=QQ7NOWKUAKIF&sprefix=the%20trimesters%20of%20grief

And then cut and paste it into goodreads?  https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/258753408-the-trimesters-of-grief?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_35
